Young Leaders in Persons with Disablities in Gilgit Baltistan

I had subconscious foreign biases while crossing Dassu and going to Chilas. These biases include to what extent Persons With Disablities were independent enough from their families to struggle for PWDs. I predicted 20 to 25% percent – I was wrong; more than 100% of them were separated in their circles. Now what do I mean by independent – I mean the ability to express themselves and coherently structure their viewpoints.

I was pleased to see how people at Goodwill development center could speak for their rights (see video below). Based on this, I outline some routine exercises below that the team at Goodwill Center does, which raises other important questions.

Every morning at 10 am, the team starts their routine exercises. Farhan teaches students four basic computer Skills with Hakim Bhai at the LED Bulb Station. Next, the team sits down to reflect upon students’ mistakes and catch up with them about their problems. This usually happens late afternoon after 1 pm. The team with Farhan then catches up with any other external work that must be done away from the office.

So this raises questions one for us and one for the government or the powers.

  1. How long are we going to keep silent and pretend that there is no work being done on the ground?
  2. Are we going to other them for the rest of our life?

These questions might be met with no response, but we will keep doing our work. No matter what. Goodwill will always promote grassroots leadership from the ground. These young leaders want nothing else than to live in an inclusive society. I see it as a wasted opportunity if we do not give them time to flourish.

Social Work for an excluded community? What was the point? A Ray of Hope

In the 21st century, life moves on; individuals move to cities, countries, towns, or villages; team GB GWM noticed that there was no work for the disabled communities who have been excluded from society. Society is defined as a social product created by the actions of individuals that then exert a coercive social force back on those individuals. Through their collective consciousness, Durkheim argued, human beings become aware of one another as social beings, not just animals. Can a society prosper if some people are excluded from social life?

Doctors and Disabled people

As witnessed during this pandemic, we all need doctors, especially our disabled community. For example, during the first wave of COVID-19 in Gilgit Baltistan, two doctors helped us identify a Ghizer patient who was hypoglycemic and had some form of Autism or mental health issues. The patient’s family desperately needed medications ranging from 25,000 PKR to 30,000 PKR.

A new hope, a new possibility. Reflecting on GB GWM’s 1st year in GB society

Muhammad Ali once said ‘ If my mind can conceive it if my heart can believe it–then I can achieve it.” Of course, a boxer from an ethnic minority in the USA was unthinkable in the 1950s and 60s America, but no matter what his circumstances were, he always fought on; that\\\’s what we need to do in our society.

Our reaction to Mr. Amjad Hussain’s Statement in GBLA

With all due respect to Amjad Hussain, the Leader of the Opposition, for raising a voice about persons with disablities, we do not accept the fact that special persons should only receive a stipend of 2000 Pakistani rupees (10$) per month. This is a highly irresponsible comment to say within these economic circumstances. Instead of giving us 10$ per month, why does the government not introduce educational, skills-based programs that we can use to empower ourselves.

Persons with Disabilities in a society. The role of civil society – 1

A society can not flourish without persons with disablities contributing to it. However, persons with disablities in the developed world are not disabled; in fact, some have even addressed them as differently-abled. Therefore, regardless of the semantics, persons with disablities should have the right to education, whether from Ghizer, Hunza, Astore, or Gilgit. The Government cannot be just blamed for disability exclusion; CIVIL SOCIETY IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE. For example, in Q2 of 2021, Disablity employment increased within the UK

What measures are taken by the Government of Gilgit Baltistan for its persons with disablities?

Gilgit Baltistan, the hub of tourism in Pakistan, faces an ethical dilemma. Its mountains and views are breathtaking, and its people are peace-loving, but the issue for its persons with disablities is very tragic. Persons with disablities , special persons’, are socially excluded from society or from family. If they are fortunate and the family does support them, then they are only educated to the primary level, rending them of further educational opportunities. If a PWD has to be educated, they must go down south to other provinces which aren’t affordable for everyone. On top of that, there is no hostel facility for persons with disablities. Rending disabled children who live outside of Gilgit, are excluded as the National Accountability Bureau, has taken over their building which is unethical on many levels.
