Awareness Session on Disability Rights in Gilgit-Baltistan Introduction:

An awareness session on disability rights was conducted yesterday at Karakoram International University (KIU) in Gilgit. The event was organized by Gilgit-Baltistan’s Goodwill Movement, a charitable organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of disabled individuals in the region and social welfare department government of Gilgit-Baltistan in collaboration with sociology department of Karakoram international university Gilgit-Baltistan. The session aimed to raise awareness about disability rights, promote inclusivity, and highlight the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Gilgit-Baltistan. Event Details:
The awareness session took place in the Musheraf hall Karakoram International University. The event attracted a diverse audience, including students, faculty members, representatives from local non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government officials, and persons with disabilities themselves. The session commenced at 12:05 pm and lasted for approximately three hours. Guest Speakers:

Rights: The speakers provided an overview of disability rights under national and international laws, including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. They emphasized the need for equal opportunities, non-discrimination, and accessible environments. Challenges Faced by Persons with Disabilities: The session shed light on the various challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Gilgit-Baltistan, such as limited access to education, inadequate healthcare facilities, lack of employment opportunities, and social stigma. The speakers urged the audience to address these challenges collectively. Employment and Economic Empowerment: The session focused on the significance of creating inclusive employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. The speakers discussed strategies for promoting economic empowerment, vocational training, and entrepreneurship among individuals with disabilities. Advocacy and Policy Reforms: The need for effective advocacy and policy reforms to protect and promote disability rights was emphasized.
