Educating a Disabled Student.

The Goodwill Movement, a student-led initiative, is making remarkable strides in fostering inclusivity and empowerment for the disabled youth of Gilgit Baltistan. By providing a platform for effective communication and skill development, the movement aims to help disabled individuals thrive in society.

However, the economic challenges faced by disabled individuals outside Gilgit Baltistan cannot be ignored. A disabled student studying Islamic Banking and Finance, recently reached out to the Goodwill Movement seeking support to overcome a financial crisis jeopardizing her education. In this article, we delve into her story and the significance of supporting disabled students in Pakistan.

Supporting Disabled Students in Pakistan:

The Goodwill Movement has been at the forefront of empowering disabled youth in Gilgit Baltistan by offering a platform for effective communication and skill development. This student-led initiative has harnessed the power of social media platforms and the website to enable the disabled community to express their thoughts and emotions confidently.

A determined 5th-semester student of Islamic Banking and Finance, hailing from Jutiyal, Gilgit, has faced considerable financial hardships. Despite her university fees being waived as a disabled student, the burden of hostel fees, amounting to over 1 lakh PKR, has become an insurmountable obstacle for her. Syeda’s heartfelt letter to the Goodwill Movement highlights the struggles of disabled students living outside Gilgit Baltistan in the face of Pakistan’s economic turmoil.

The Intersection of Gender and Disability:

Being a woman with a disability in Pakistan brings its own set of challenges and caveats. Her story reflects the struggles faced by many disabled women in the country. The lack of empathy from the hostel warden exacerbates her situation, leaving her uncertain about her future and education.
Inclusive Education and the Mehnaz Fatima Inclusive Education System: her educational journey began at the Mehnaz Fatima Inclusive Education System, where she excelled and held an A GRADE. The importance of inclusive education in nurturing the potential of disabled students cannot be overstated. However, financial constraints have now put her education at risk.

Appeal for Support: The Goodwill Movement, known for its compassion and empathy, aims to make a difference in her life by raising funds for her outstanding hostel fees. Donations are being sought to support not only her but also other disabled students facing similar financial crises in the future.

Disability Development and Access to Education:

At the heart of the Goodwill Movement’s mission is disability development, which includes increasing access to education and training for people with disabilities. By supporting students like her, the movement is taking significant steps towards breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive society.

Conclusion:

The Goodwill Movement’s student-led efforts in empowering disabled youth in Gilgit Baltistan are commendable. However, it is crucial to extend support beyond the region and address the financial challenges faced by disabled students living in other areas of Pakistan. This story serves as a poignant reminder of the need for compassion and generosity to ensure that no disabled student’s education is jeopardized due to financial constraints.

By contributing to the cause, individuals can play a vital role in shaping a brighter and more inclusive future for disabled students in Pakistan.

Developing Linkages with Pakistan Foundation Fighting Blindness.

Pakistan Foundation Fighting Blindness (PFFB) has actively participated in activities to create awareness about visually impaired persons. On the 13th of July, PFFB visited Goodwill Office.

During this significant meeting, the agenda focused on rehabilitating visually impaired individuals and championing their rights. The discussion aimed to raise awareness and find practical solutions to support their inclusion in society. As part of this visit, white canes and assistive devices were distributed among visually impaired individuals. These tools will empower them to navigate their surroundings more confidently and independently. 💪

The collaboration between PFFB and GBGM is a beacon of hope for visually impaired individuals, ensuring that their needs and rights are acknowledged and addressed. We are working towards a more inclusive and accessible society for all. 🌍❤️

The recent passage of the budget by the Gilgit-Baltistan’s government

The recent passage of the budget by the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly once again highlights a concerning pattern regarding the treatment of disabled individuals in the region. While the Chief Minister’s Package for disabled persons serves as a short-term measure, it is insufficient to address the long-term needs of this marginalized community.

The Travel Difficulties For PWDS

At some stage, when this organization eventually becomes larger and expands, future researchers or historians will describe the geographical boundaries that GBGM had to face in the past.

However, returning to accessibility and the transport issue, we must appreciate those learners who want to learn their skills and get trained at the center because Gilgit is a highly mountainous region, and limited people can come. So how do our students come? Occasionally with the help of some volunteers, notably those studying at the university, help people to travel to our center. But the most significant contribution is that of our eldest brother Abdul Hakeem https://gbgoodwillmovement.com/stories-of-the-resilient-abdul-hakeem/ who, despite his disablities, has to come from Oshikhandas, has to pick up students from there and drop them every day.

I just wanted to share this not because we are looking for sympathy but because heading an NGO in Gilgit with these diffculties is challenging for the organization. With no transport, PWDs are not easily identified and there is a lack of data. However more importantly the centre plays a part in being a place for PWDs to meet and discuss their issues as a community. Without this place, more PWDs will not be aware of their rights or freedoms.

We urge people to think about this benefit of the center.

The Guide for Tourists in Gilgit – Disability Inclusion invite

Many tourists traveling to Gilgit Baltistan during the summer period will be interested in the mountain ranges, the food, and the culture of Gilgit Baltistan. Tourists will not be aware that there is a history of People with Disablities struggling for their rights as of today. In the World, PWDs are marginalized, with 16% of them making up the global population. In Gilgit, the awareness surrounding persons with disablities has only begun.

The Gilgit Baltistan’s Goodwill Movement provides free training to Persons with Disablities in IT skills, Led Bulb Making, and hopefully tailoring and stitching in the near future. We all are graduates from different universities who are struggling to further the cause of the disability rights movement.

Our skills development center/office is in Zulfiqar Abad Gilgit, near ChCha Chai. This is near the main bazaar of Gilgit. We hope that you can find some time to visit the Goodwill office and ask any questions that you may have.
