As we reflected on in an earlier article, what is meant by a helping hand for the disabled community? This article thoroughly discusses how this hand relies on donations from individuals, enterprises, and organizations. We spoke of transnational organizations such as Unicef, Islamic Relief, and Save the Children. In this charitious work, sometimes the marginalized are forgotten about. For example, Islamic Relief may have disabled-related programs, but their targeted initiatives only go so far and are limited in scope. During Ramadan, when we as Muslims are said to be closer to Allah, the Quran, and the traditions, we introspect. Sometimes we change habits – quit smoking, quit alcohol, quit slandering, and quit overall bad habits. We might think that these changes are good, but that is acceptable to a certain point. One way of observing Ramadan is by quitting watching television and music and using social media. We talk about ‘ the news’ on mass and social media as ‘ having a bad impact’ on our mental health, but how can we define its levels? Now I am not saying that everyone does not feel depression or anxiety or that the individual does not feel its other effects; instead,

First, let me say that some individuals will not like this article as it addresses the disabled cause objectively without considering emotions and feelings. I am sorry for this; however, it needs to be addressed. Given that ableism is rampant worldwide, there is a need to address the elephant in the room, which is why disabled groups are ignored. Every visitor has their opinion, of course. Still, given that disabled people are running the organization, there seems to be a bit of conflict due to groupthink regarding ‘ whether we’ are professional enough to run this organization. I will argue that we are and have shown results, as you can see in the articles we publish regularly.

Inspired by ‘ Ten Reasons Why People Don’t Donate to Charity’ , the Goodwill movement sets out five reasons why donating to this charity is a good idea.

1 – I already Give enough to my Local Community, and I am not from the region

It might be the case, and hats off to you for donating to other causes, however since the Goodwill Movement is focused on one leading cause, to further disabled rights in Gilgit Baltistan, donors will feel more personal satisfaction that work is being done on the ground by our team, individuals who have disablities themselves.

Some, including myself, are tempted to donate to charities. So we log on to their website. We go on the donation webpage and say wait for a second. Am I thinking this through? Do I know them personally? Have I ever met these people? Are they legit? Millions of donors suffer the bystander effect, The bystander effect or bystander apathy, is a social psychological theory that states that individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim in the presence of other people, in this case by donating to Gilgit Baltistan’s Goodwill Movement. It happens to all of us. However, this dilemma eats us up so much we walk away,  shut down what we were doing and then move on. This psychological dilemma is human behavior, so most NGOs, especially in Pakistan can not collect as many donations. In this article, I try to answer as many doubts as a human mind can think of.

In these last days of Ramadan, let us reflect on what is the SOCIAL MODEL Versus the Goodwill Model. I will try to loosely translate Urdu thoughts that are open for debate and what donors feel, as I have mentioned that I have been a donor myself before starting GBGM. First I would like to thank those wellwishers and donors who have taken the time out of their lives to donate – Those who still want to contribute can donate via the RAMADAN 2023 tab. Secondly, I would like to address some questions I had as a Donor and an NGO head.

Today, Gilgit Baltistan Goodwill Movement distributed food rations to the members of the disabled community within Gilgit City. This was a package sponsored by Al Khidmat Foundation Gilgit Baltistan. The Food ration included Dahls, Tea Bags, Cooking Oils, Sawyeen and Rice, which would support a household for the Eid activities and hopefully for some months beyond. However, the question remains without organizations such as GBGM and the Al Khidmat Foundation, who have consistently supported the needs of the disabled community and needy persons during such festive periods. Without such organizations, no disabled member would have been recognized, let alone acknowledged by the decision-making authorities.

The questions I have set out can be answered in a few words: yes or no, but life is not as simple as we think it is.

When I have seen disabled people studying or working, I can not get away from the fact that out of 1000 people working the course, maybe 5% might be disabled, but out of that 5%, nearly all, if not a majority still try their best to achieve their end result whether that may be a pass or fail.

In Pakistan, when disabled persons sleep, they think, ‘ What have I done to my family? Why do they deserve this ‘. Unlike other topics, disabled people can only think, and when expressing their opinions are just ignored. Since we have covered Ableism and the destructive effects of disablity exclusion, let us now consider a Joint Family Household Case Scenario. In household 1, we have three families. Family 1 has two children, Family 2 has four children and Family 3 has six children. Family 1 has doctors; family two has teachers; family 3 has laborers. Across all these families, 1/3 of the children are disabled, and all have the substantial income to take care of their disabled children, who receive no education, are cognitively not challenged, and are excluded from social events. This is a typical case scenario of a household within Pakistan and GB.
